Berliner Opernfreunde kennen ihn bereits durch Gastdirigate an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden und der Komischen Oper. Nun gibt der 1974 in Athen geborene Constantinos Carydis mit diesen Konzerten sein Debüt am Dirigentenpult der Berliner Philharmoniker. Der 2011 mit dem Carlos-Kleiber-Preis der Bayerischen Staatsoper ausgezeichnete Carydis erlernte sein künstlerisches Handwerk am Konservatorium seiner Heimatstadt (Musiktheorie und Klavier) sowie an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in München (Dirigieren). Erste Engagements führten ihn an das Münchner Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz und an die Württembergische Staatsoper in Stuttgart. 2006 debütierte er an der Wiener Staatsoper, fünf Jahre später dann am Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Mittlerweile ist er regelmäßig Gast an renommierten Opernhäusern wie der Bayerischen Staatsoper, der Oper Frankfurt, der Nederlandse Opera oder der Opéra de Lyon. Festivalproduktionen führten ihn u. a. nach Salzburg, Edinburgh, Glyndebourne und Ascona. Als Konzertdirigent arbeitet Carydis mit Klangkörpern wie dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, dem NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, dem Orchester der Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, dem Mahler Chamber Orchestra, dem Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, dem Mozarteum Orchester oder den Bamberger Symphonikern zusammen.

Für seinen Einstand bei den Berliner Philharmonikern hat der stets ohne Taktstock dirigierende Carydis Werke von zwei der bedeutendsten Symphoniker überhaupt auf das Programm gesetzt: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart und Dmitri Schostakowitsch. Eröffnet wird das Konzert von Mozarts C-Dur-Symphonie KV 338, dem letzten Gattungsbeitrag des Komponisten aus seiner Salzburger Zeit. Wenn am Ende der Abende dann die 16 Jahre später entstandene, sogenannte Prager Symphonie Mozarts erklingt, wird deutlich, welche für die Geschichte der Gattung bedeutende Entwicklung Mozart durchlaufen hat. Zwischen diesen Werken sind Orchesterarrangements von zwei kammermusikalischen Kompositionen Schostakowitschs zu erleben: das Achte Streichquartett c-Moll, das der Bratscher und Dirigent Rudolf Barschai mit Billigung des Komponisten (O-Ton Schostakowitsch: »Das klingt ja besser als das Original!«) als Kammersymphonie für Streichorchester bearbeitet hat, sowie die frühen Zwei Stücke für Streichoktett op. 11, die ebenfalls in einer Bearbeitung für Streichorchester erklingen. Ein kontrastreiches Programm, das dem philharmonischen Debütanten Gelegenheit bietet, unterschiedlichste Facetten seines Könnens unter Beweis zu stellen.
