Johannes Brahms Violinkonzert D-Dur op. 77 ist das Violinkonzert der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Am 17. April 2015 spielten Frank Peter Zimmermann und das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks das Werk unter der Leitung von Chefdirigent Mariss Jansons in der Münchner Philharmonie im Gasteig.

Sich im symphonischen Gewebe des Violinkonzerts von Johannes Brahms gegen das große Orchester zu behaupten, sei nicht immer einfach, oft auch ein Kampf, sagt Frank Peter Zimmermann, einer der bedeutendsten Violinisten unserer Zeit. Aber genau darin liegt auch ein Reiz des Stückes, im gegenseitigen Geben und Nehmen, Zuhören und Vorantreiben. So war es am 17. April 2015 mit Zimmermann und dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks unter der Leitung von Chefdirigent Mariss Jansons zu erleben. In der Münchner Philharmonie im Gasteig brillierte der Solist, schwang sich gemeinsam mit dem Orchester in immer neue Höhen auf oder ließ sich lauschend auf die Szenerie ein, so zum Beispiel bei der Oboen-Einleitung des zweiten Satzes, für Zimmermann immer aufs Neue eine Stelle „zum Niederknien“. Das Violinkonzert D-Dur op. 77 von Johannes Brahms wäre sicherlich undenkbar ohne den großen Vorgänger, das Violinkonzert von Beethoven, ist aber seinerseits Vorbild für eine ganze Reihe symphonisch angelegter Violinkonzerte der Spätromantik und des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Es markiert eine ganz andere Tradition als die Werke von Geigenakrobaten wie Niccolò Paganini, Henryk Wieniawski oder Henri Vieuxtemps. Der erste Satz ist einer der längsten Eröffnungssätze der Violinliteratur. Das Werk strotzt vor technischen Schwierigkeiten, die schon Joseph Joachim, Geigenlegende und enger Freund von Brahms, bedenklich stimmten. Joachim war es, der das Konzert uraufführte und die von ihm komponierte Solokadenz zum ersten Satz wurde fast schon zum Standard für dieses Werk. Diese Kadenz wählte auch Frank Peter Zimmermann für seine Aufführung mit dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
