Karthago, nach Ende des Trojanischen Krieges: Der trojanische Held und Überlebende des Krieges, Aeneas, sucht Zuflucht im neu gegründeten Karthago der Königin Dido. Die beiden verlieben sich ineinander ... - Das barocke Opernmeisterwerk von Henry Purcell aus dem Jahr 1689 beruht auf Vergils Epos "Aeneis". Inszenierung: Vincent Huguet.

„Dido und Aeneas“: Schauplatz von Purcells Oper ist Karthago. Der Trojanische Krieg ist vorüber. Aeneas, als Trojaner im Exil, sucht Schutz in der von Königin Dido gegründeten Stadt. Die beiden treffen aufeinander und verlieben sich für die Dauer einer Jagdpartie unsterblich ineinander. Doch Purcell lässt – von Shakespeare inspiriert – eine Zauberin und zwei Hexen dieses Glück zerstören: Für die Dauer eines Rezitativs streiten sich Aeneas und Dido bis aufs Blut. Also bricht Aeneas mit seinen Anhängern nach Italien auf, um dort seine Aufgabe zu vollbringen und ein neues Weltreich gründen. Zutiefst getroffen und verletzt wählt Dido den ihr als einzig wahr erscheinenden Ausweg: den Freitod. Das Scheitern der Protagonisten scheint weniger durch Götterwillkür begründet, als vielmehr durch ein zwischenmenschliches, aber auch persönliches Ringen um Schuld, Begierde und Pflichtbewusstsein. Aufbauend auf dieser an Vergils Epos „Aeneis“ angelehnten Handlung komponierte Henry Purcell eine der ersten englischen Opern und ein wahres Schmuckstück des Genres. Das Schicksal schlägt hart zu in dem nur einstündigen Drama. Bühnenregisseur Vincent Huguet erweiterte die Perspektive: Der Prolog der französischen Schriftstellerin Maylis de Kerangal beschreibt Didos Reisen vor ihrer Niederlassung in Karthago. Dieser lyrische Zusatz beleuchtet die Widersprüche, die Licht- und Schattenseiten, im Inneren jedes Wesens. Auf der Bühne im Innenhof des Erzbischöflichen Palais in Aix-en-Provence werden diese dann durch die junge Besetzung und die Musiker des erstmals von Vaclav Luks dirigierten Ensembles Pygmalion lebendig – eine perfekte Verknüpfung von Gegenwart und Vergangenheit.
